The proposals aim to improve patient safety by introducing clearer rules around who can perform certain cosmetic treatments, alongside stronger protections for young people.
What is being proposed?
The Government is seeking views on several key measures:
-
Restrictions on high-risk procedures: Certain cosmetic treatments would be restricted to appropriately qualified healthcare professionals.
-
Professional qualifications: Specified procedures would only be carried out by eligible regulated healthcare professionals who meet relevant training and prescribing requirements, including provisions for independent nurse and midwife prescribers.
-
Greater protection for under-18s: New safeguards would be introduced to protect young people undergoing cosmetic treatments.
-
Stronger enforcement: Proposed measures include unlimited fines for those who breach the regulations.
What happens next?
The consultation is now open, giving healthcare professionals, industry representatives and members of the public an opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed changes.
The British Association of Medical Aesthetic Nurses (BAMAN) welcomes the opportunity to review the proposals and assess their implications for medical aesthetic nursing and patient safety.
These measures remain proposals and are subject to consultation. Further updates will follow as the Government progresses its review.
